The celebration of Palestinian Land Day began on March 30, 1976, when the Israeli government intended to requisition 2,000 hectares of land belonging to Palestinian citizens in the Israeli Galilee region for official purposes.
Palestinians launched large protests, primarily in the affected areas. This was a significant event, as public protests by Arab citizens were unlikely before the 1970s. The event united Arabs on both sides of the Israeli border. Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated from the Galilee in the north to the Negev in the south against the expropriation of Palestinian land as part of Israel's policy of "Judaizing" the indigenous population of the region. The protesters faced stiff resistance. Hundreds were injured and six Palestinian civilians were killed by the Israeli army. In doing so, Israel outlawed any form of resistance, depriving Palestinians of their legal right to oppose the occupation in any way they chose.
Thousands of Palestinians - families, people of all ages - celebrate Land Day by marching peacefully in the border areas of the Gaza Strip. They call it the Great March of Return. They also plant olive trees en masse to protest Israel's occupation and related crimes. Land Day is a reminder that Israel's policy of settling and confiscating Palestinian land leads to injustice and violations against Palestinians. On this occasion, spokespersons said that more than 60,000 innocent people have been killed in the war of the past several months, most of whom are children and women. We hope that both sides will abandon the path of violence and sincerely strive for lasting peace, which was dreamt of years ago by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the founders of the United Nations, the late Dr. Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Front and our forefathers.
