Bangladesh Medical Association’s 24-hour ultimatum to arrest accused in Magura Mohammadpur

A case has been filed against 6 people in connection with the brutal attack on Dr. Md. Asadur Rahman, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex in Magura. The Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) has given a press conference and ultimatum in protest of this incident and demanding the arrest of the accused within the next 24 hours.

The press conference was organized by BMA on Saturday afternoon, February 14, at the Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex auditorium. BMA District President Dr. Alimuzzaman was present as the main speaker. Doctors, journalists and local dignitaries were present at the press conference.

BMA leaders strongly condemned this heinous attack and said that it would be impossible to provide services if there is no security at the workplace of doctors. The speakers questioned why the attackers were still out of reach even though they were clearly seen in the CCTV footage. They clearly warned that strict action would be taken if the accused were not brought to justice within the next 24 hours.

According to hospital and CCTV footage, two patients named Milon and Noor, who were injured in a road accident, came to the hospital for treatment on Friday morning. As Milon’s condition was critical, the doctor on duty transferred him to Faridpur Medical College for advanced treatment and kept Noor admitted to the hospital.
Later, several youths including the patient’s relative Chhatra Dal leader Yusuf came to the emergency department and asked about the patient. At that time, when doctor Md. Asadur Rahman asked them to wait for a while, a verbal altercation broke out. At one stage, the angry youths attacked the doctor and repeatedly hit him with sticks and chairs. When he tried to stop them, the on-duty DSB member Mainul Islam was also insulted and his mobile phone was taken away.

The injured doctor, Dr. Asadur Rahman, said, “I was providing care to a dying patient. At that time, 4-5 young men came to talk. When I asked them to talk later, they attacked me.” On the other hand, the relatives of the accused claimed that when the doctor asked about the patient’s condition, he first behaved rudely and disrespectfully, which later turned into a fight.

Mohammadpur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Kazi Abu Ahsan has filed a case with the police station, naming 9 people as the plaintiff in this incident. Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Ashrafuzzaman said, “A case has been registered in the case of beating the doctor. The police operation to arrest the accused is ongoing. They will be brought under the law very soon.”
