Shathibari Market, one of the busiest commercial hubs in Mithapukur Upazila, Rangpur, is facing growing chaos due to rampant encroachment by wholesale traders and illegal street vendors. Every day, thousands of people visit this market for shopping, but the increasing occupation of walkways, roads, and market spaces by unauthorized vendors has created unbearable difficulties for both traders and shoppers.
In recent times, many shop owners have expanded beyond their designated spaces, using narrow alleys and main pathways to store goods. As a result, the already congested market has become even more difficult to navigate. Key entry points and walkways are blocked, forcing pedestrians to squeeze through narrow gaps or step onto the main roads, increasing the risk of accidents. Customers, who once moved freely through the market, now find themselves struggling through overcrowded passages.
The problem is further aggravated by the illegal occupation of roadsides. The ongoing six-lane expansion work on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway has already limited pedestrian space, and now, unauthorized vendors have set up makeshift shops along the road, leaving no room for people to walk safely. With no other option, pedestrians are being forced to walk along the highway, increasing the risk of road accidents. Many locals have raised concerns, stating that small accidents are now a daily occurrence in the area.
One of the market’s regular visitors expressed his frustration, saying, “Earlier, we could easily walk through the market, but now every pathway is blocked. The only option left is to walk on the main road, which is extremely risky. If this situation continues, serious accidents are inevitable.”
Traders and shoppers have urged the authorities to take immediate steps to remove illegal encroachments from the market. A coordinated effort involving the Market Traders’ Association, Wholesale Traders’ Association, and Road Authorities is necessary to bring back order. If this mismanagement continues unchecked, the suffering of the general public will only increase. To restore discipline and ensure a safe environment for everyone, strict monitoring and regular enforcement actions are essential.
