Allegation of Treating Heart Attack Patient as Gastric Case at Shakhipur Modern Hospital

A patient suffering from a heart attack was allegedly treated for gastric problems at Shakhipur Modern Hospital in Shariatpur.

Md. Iktarul Sardar of Shakhipur, Shariatpur, was admitted to Shakhipur Modern Hospital on 19/02/2026 at approximately 12:10 AM with symptoms of chest pain and vomiting. He remained admitted in the hospital for nearly 12 hours.

Tasfikul Islam Tasin Sardar said that the attending physician, Dr. Sheikh Delowar Alam Jilani, informed him that it was a gastric issue and not a major problem, assuring that there was no risk. Even after repeatedly asking whether it could be serious, the doctor said it was gas-related and there was nothing to worry about.

They had arranged an ambulance to take the patient to Dhaka, but they did not go after the doctor advised against it. Later, when the chest pain increased, on the advice of his uncle, they took his father to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital in Dhaka. After examinations, doctors informed them that his father had suffered a heart attack about 24 hours earlier. They said a stent placement is now required, and if proper treatment had been given immediately, there was a possibility of recovery through medication.

Regarding the matter, hospital manager Arif Sarker said that the attending doctor would be able to explain, as he was not present at that time.

When attempting to speak with the doctor, it was learned that he had resigned from or had been relieved of his duties at Shakhipur Modern Hospital.

When contacted by phone in the presence of journalists, the doctor stated that after conducting examinations he did not find any heart-related problem. He also said he resigned from his job after consulting the manager due to concerns about his safety.

Later, the victim’s son, Tasfikul Islam Tasin Sardar, submitted a complaint to the Civil Surgeon and the Deputy Commissioner.
