Nayan Das (29), the Shariatpur district correspondent for the online news portal Dhaka Post, has been attacked by drug traffickers and gamblers while performing his professional duties. Muhammad Azaharul Islam, a central executive member of the Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation and former Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the Shariatpur-3 constituency, rushed to the hospital to visit the injured journalist.
On Saturday (February 28), he visited the Gosairhat Upazila Health Complex to inquire about the medical condition of Nayan Das, who is currently undergoing treatment there.
Background of the Incident According to local sources, residents recently detained a drug dealer in the Nagerpara area and handed him over to the police. To report on this, Nayan Das, along with Shahed Ahmed Babu (Jugantor), Alam Sardar (Desh Pratidin), and local journalist Hasan Shikdar, visited the spot. During their visit, locals informed them that drug trading and gambling sessions were also taking place in the neighboring Uttar Molongchora area. The journalists subsequently captured photos and videos of the scene on their mobile phones. This angered Monir Jamadar, a drug dealer and gambling ringleader, and his associates.
Last Thursday afternoon, while Nayan Das was on his way to Shariatpur town for professional work, he was intercepted at Nagerpara Bazar. Monir Jamadar, Saidul Akon, Nazrul Kazi, Likhon Kazi, and several others blocked his motorcycle and launched a physical assault. The attackers fled the scene after injuring him. Local residents rescued Nayan and took him home, but his condition worsened at night. He was eventually admitted to the Gosairhat Upazila Health Complex by his family on Friday morning.
Demands for Justice Media professionals, civil society members, and local political figures have strongly condemned the attack and demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
During his visit, Muhammad Azaharul Islam stated:
”Journalists are the mirror of the nation. They highlight social and national inconsistencies before the public. It is extremely tragic that journalist Nayan Das was attacked by drug traffickers and gamblers. I strongly condemn this assault. I urge his family to remain patient and wish him a speedy recovery. I also call upon the administration to immediately bring the culprits to justice and ensure they face punishment.”
Accompanying him during the visit were Maulana Syed Nasir Uddin (Amir, Gosairhat Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami), Secretary Sarkar Newaz Sharif, Municipal Amir Abu Taher, Secretary Noman Siddiqui, Zillur Rahman Dewan (President, Gosairhat Upazila Sramik Kalyan Federation), and other local leaders.
