In a shocking incident reflecting escalating political tensions, Awami League leaders & activists accused of brutal attack over case withdrawal attempt; victim Tanvir Ahmed (28), younger brother of Abdullah Al Zabir,

a former secretary of Dhaka University’s Chhatra Shibir , was brutally attacked by alleged Awami League leader Shah Jalal Paik(55) & his other group members inside the Madaripur court premises on last Wednesday 9th April 2025. The assault, which left Tanvir with severe stab wounds, occurred as he sought to withdraw a “politically motivated” case filed against his brother, now a London expatriate.

Eyewitnesses reported that Tanvir, accompanied by lawyers, was brutally attacked by a group of Awamileague & Chatraleague cadres and plaintiff associates near the court. The attackers tried to kill him with sharp weapons while warning, “Your brother’s case will never be withdrawn. If he returns to Bangladesh, we’ll kill him & You’re next.” Local residents rescued the bloodied victim and rushed him to Madaripur Chowdhury Clinic before he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition. Hospital authorities confirmed multiple deep wounds.

The attack stems from an ongoing case filed by local Awamileague Leader against Abdullah Al Zabir , accusing him of undisclosed charges. His family claims the case is “fabricated,” emphasizing Abdullah wasn’t present there during the alleged incident. An arrest warrant remains active, though Abdullah has been in London for years. Relatives allege the case is part of a broader campaign to harass the family, with Awamileague leaders refusing to withdraw it despite lacking evidence.

Abdullah’s family accused Awamileague cadres of openly threatening their lives. “They warn us daily: if Abdullah returns, they’ll murder him. Now they’ve tried to kill Tanvir they told reporters. They further criticized Madaripur police for “deliberate inaction,” claiming no arrests were made despite identifying attackers. When contacted, local police declined to comment on the incident or the allegations.

The attack has reignited concerns over political violence in Madaripur, particularly after August 5—a date opposition groups associate with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “authoritarian policies.” Locals allege Awamileague and it’s student wing, Chhatra League, have intensified aggressive tactics since then. “This daylight court attack proves their impunity,” said a shopkeeper near the premises, requesting anonymity.
